Adams County, Colorado is home to over 441,000 people, and is the fifth most populous county in the state. Located in Northeast Colorado, Adams County includes the towns and cities of Arvada, Aurora, Bennett, Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Strasburg, Thornton and Westminster. The land in the county is primarily agricultural, with over three quarters of the 759,000 acres of land being used for various farming activities.
History
Prior to 1902, Adams County was part of Arapahoe County. In 1902, voters approved creation of the county, which was named after Alva Adams, who held the position of governor at that time.
Demographics
According to the 2010 census, Adams County had the 10th highest growth rate in Colorado. There are approximately 305 people per square mile in the county. The median income for a family in Adams County is $47,323 and the median income for a family is $52,517. Over 6.5% of the county’s families and 8.9% of the total population of Adams County are below the national poverty level.
Barr Lake State Park
Barr Lake State Park is one of the most popular destinations in Adams County. The 2,715-acre park includes a wildlife refuge that has viewing stations and a nature center. The area is most well known for the numerous bald eagles that winter at Barr Lake, including one pair that nests every year in the park. Birdwatchers can enjoy over 300 species of birds in addition to the bald eagle, and the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is located within Barr Lake State Park. There are also 12 miles of trails, fish and boating available to visitors
