A Littleton man is currently facing charges of DUI, vehicular manslaughter and careless driving after a fatal car accident that occurred Monday ended up killing an off-duty Littleton police officer. According to the police report associated with the case, the suspect had been driving eastbound on East Belleview Avenue in Aurora when he made a left-hand turn that cut off the police officer who was riding his motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The abrupt left-hand turn resulted in the officer’s motorcycle crashing into the left-hand side of the suspect’s vehicle. Although the cop had been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the impact caused the helmet to be thrown off of the cop, who ultimately died from his injuries.

The suspect reportedly waited at the scene of the accident for authorities to show up. Following initial investigation of the scene, the suspect was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving, vehicular manslaughter and careless driving. The police report did not detail whether the suspect was asked to submit to a breathalyzer or whether a blood test was administered in order to assess his blood alcohol content; nor did the police report specific what the suspect’s alleged BAC was at the time of the accident. Currently, the suspect is being held on $50,000 bond, and he is scheduled to go before the court for the first hearing in this case tomorrow.

Although the suspect does not reportedly have a criminal record, the charges he faces are extremely serious and could result in up to 24 years in prison if he is ultimately convicted of all charges that he faces. Given the severity of the charges in this case, it’s vital that the suspect work with an experienced DUI defense lawyer for the best chances of resolving his case as favorably as possible.
