A woman from Longmont, Colorado has been arrested for allegedly hitting a 16-year-old boy in Denver on New Year’s Eve and then fleeing the scene of the crime. The boy was allegedly trying to escape from a fight, and the accused woman is known to have been friends with those who were involved in the fight. The alleged hit-and-run occurred in the 2200 block of North Main Street, and the woman is facing third degree felony charges for the fatal car accident. The accused woman’s mother has stated that her daughter could not have possibly committed the crime because she was in church with her when the accident occurred; however, police alleged that the suspect had left church, during which time she allegedly killed the teenager and then she later returned.

At this time, it is unclear whether the woman had been driving under the influence of drugs or any type of medication (including over-the-counter drugs, prescription drugs or illicit drugs), as the arrest occurred well after the accident. Additionally, law enforcement officials have not reported whether other mitigating circumstances, such as distracted driving, poor roadway conditions or a vehicle malfunction, may have played a role in causing the fatal car crash.

A skilled Colorado criminal defense lawyer, such as those at the Law Firm of Jeremy Rosenthal, can mount a fierce defense case for those facing hit-and-run charges like the Longmont woman. With little details known in the case, there may be a large amount of room to argue that the police and prosecutors do not have enough evidence to convict the accused woman beyond a reasonable doubt. Additionally, an experienced defense attorney may be able to argue that another person was driving the accused woman’s vehicle at the time of the fatal car accident or that circumstances beyond the woman’s control (such as a vehicle malfunction or poor roadway conditions) caused the accident.
